You can pay the sports equipment fee upon check in at the airport counter but it will be more expensive and limited to 20kg. If you pre-book online, you can select from various Sport Equipment weight tiers: 15kg, 20kg, 25kg, 30kg, 35kg and 40kg. These Sport Equipment fees are typically slightly higher than regular Baggage fees as it includes a handling fee.

Counter check-in is free of charge on other airlines. What is the rationale for AirAsia to implement a fee?

This is to promote better efficiency and be cost effective. AirAsia will now focus on self check-in (via web and mobile) and counter check-in will be chargeable as it is an additional service with added human resources. It will be considered as part of AirAsia value added service to its guests.

Counter check-in charges will also be part of ancillary revenue stream. Revenue via ancillary streams helps AirAsia offset the escalating jet fuel price, which has exceeded USD$110 per barrel. Instead of transferring the full cost of the jetfuel price hike to AirAsia guests, AirAsia choses to counter the spike by aggressively growing its revenue through ancillary products and services.

What is counter check-in fee?

Counter check-in fee is a service fee that applies to a guest who performs a manual check-in at the airport check-in counter for domestic flights.

Why RM10?

The RM10 charge is based on the calculation of rental and manpower cost needed per day of operations, for one pax per check-in counter.

When will it be effective?

Effective 22 Dec 2011, check-in fees for international flights will be waived whereas there will be no changes in fees for domestic flights.

How much is the counter check-in fee and does the fee vary by destination/airport?

Counter check-in fee is RM10 (and its currency exchange equivalent) per guest and payable at the airport check-in counter or online. The fee will be the same across all destinations and airports where counter check-in fee applies.
